Doctors Info on Phalloplasty

Procedure

  • Initial Examination A comprehensive consultation will be conducted, involving a thorough examination of the groin region and identification of the donor site. The physical and psychological implications of the procedure will be discussed in detail, providing an opportunity to address any concerns or queries. Additionally, an ultrasound examination of the kidneys and bladder may be recommended. Prior to the surgery, a series of preoperative investigations will be performed to ensure anaesthesia clearance, including a urine routine and urine culture.
  • Day of the Procedure
    • Please be advised that you must refrain from consuming any food or beverages for a minimum of 10 hours before your surgical procedure. Kindly ensure that you bring all of your previous medical records with you. The anaesthesiologist will conduct a thorough medical history review before transferring you to the operating theatre.
  • Process of the Surgery There are several surgical techniques used in penile lengthening phalloplasty, including:
    • Release of the suspensory ligament: The most common method for penile lengthening involves releasing the penile suspensory ligament, which attaches the penis to the pubic bone. By surgically releasing this ligament, more of the penile shaft that is normally concealed within the body can be brought out, resulting in increased visible length of the penis.
    • Suprapubic lipectomy: In some cases, excess fat deposits above the pubic bone can obscure the base of the penis, making it appear shorter than it actually is. Suprapubic lipectomy involves removing these excess fat deposits to enhance the visibility and perceived length of the penis.
    • Pubic mound reduction: Similar to suprapubic lipectomy, pubic mound reduction involves removing excess tissue and fat from the area above the penis to improve the appearance of penile length.
    • Penile suspensory ligament reconstruction: In cases where releasing the suspensory ligament alone may not provide sufficient lengthening, some surgeons may perform a ligament reconstruction procedure using a graft or implant to further increase penile length.
  • Will I be Awake during the procedure? Yes, you will be awake during the procedure. However, you will not experience any discomfort.
  • After the Procedure?
    • You will be conscious and transferred to the recovery room. Dr Ashish Saini will assess your condition and provide you with post-operative instructions. Subsequently, you will be moved to your designated room for an overnight stay. Upon returning to the ward, you will be permitted to consume food and beverages. It is essential to have a designated caregiver to assist you in returning home.
    • You will be discharged with a catheter in place to facilitate healing and ensure proper urine drainage. We recommend that you rest for a period of 3-5 days. In some cases, you may experience mild pain, minimal blood in urine, burning sensation, or pinkish urine.
    • A follow-up appointment is necessary 3-5 days after the procedure for catheter removal and medication review. You can resume your normal routine within one week of the procedure.
