Prostate is a small gland that is located near the base of penis and helps in storing seminal fluids. These fluids constitute semen and prostate also helps in pushing the semen out of urethra. So prostate is an important gland to ensure the perfect flow of sperm along with seminal fluids. Urinary infections often can affect prostate gland as well due to their proximity. Prostate disease treatment is absoultely necessary well in time for fast recovery and good patient outcome.
Some of the most common prostate diseases are –
1. Prostatitis
As the name suggests, prostatitis is an inflammation of the prostate gland which may or may not be a result of any urinary tract infection. The symptoms of prostatitis include burning sensation while passing urine, discomfort in lower abdomen, pain while ejaculation may or may not be there. Mild fever may accompany.
Treatment of Prostatitis – It normally gets treated fully by the prescribed course of medicines and the good consumption of fluids.
2. Enlarged Prostate (BPH)
This benign prostate hyperplasia or BPH is commonly known as enlarged prostate. In this disease, the prostate gland increased in size more than usual, this leads to problems in urination and a constant heaviness in the lower abdomen. The other symptoms of BPH include urinary incontinence (urgency and frequency of urine increase), inability to empty the bladder fully, frequent urination at night etc.
Treatment of BPH or Enlarged Prostate – The treatment ranges from medicines and observation to surgery. The surgery is the minimal invasive laser prostatectomy which involves no incisions as the resectoscope is inserted through the urethral opening.
Laser Prostatectomy
BPH is commonly seen in men above 40 years of age. In laser Prostatectomy, a resectoscope in inserted through the urethra and it reaches near the prostate tissue. The resectoscope also has a laser beam in it. The laser prostatectomy removes the excess prostate tissue which is causing the blockage over urethra. This improves the symptoms dramatically in most patients. The resected tissue is taken out and is sent for biopsy.
3. Prostate Cancer Treatment
Sometimes the enlarged prostate starts developing tumor like growth in it which are malignant in most cases. This cancer if diagnosed in early stages provides complete cure of cancer by the removal of prostate gland. Symptoms of prostate cancer include blood in urine, urgency incontinence, fever, loss of appetite, weight loss etc.
Diagnosis of prostate cancer –
- PSA levels in blood
- Biopsy report
- Ultrasound or other imaging studies
Prostate Cancer Treatment
- Laparoscopic Prostatectomy – A laparoscope is inserted inside the abdomen with the help of a few small incisions. This minimally invasive surgery then takes out the prostate gland with the help of the laparoscopic tools along with its vessels. This treatment is best for the cancer that has not spread to other organs or in blood stream.
- Open Radical Prostatectomy – This open surgery involves the removal of prostate gland and its related vesicles by making a large incision (8 to 10 cm) near the umbilical area.
